July 23 - Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

HOT and HUMID...that's all I'll say...not Asia hot and humid, but more than enough for me!

The main attraction for most people today is a trip in to Rome. Luckily for us we will be in Rome for a week on our own in about 10 days. Luckily, because getting to Rome from the port of Civitavecchia is about a 90 minute drive…I put in my time on the highway yesterday.

Today’s tour was right up my alley…perfect…off of the beaten path…a bit of culture, a bit of learning, a bit of sight seeing, a bit of food and drink and less than 20 people – only one of whom was a bit annoying…yes, only one. And…it we were only away for 4 hours with little bus time. And…the sites we visited were not at all busy. Apparently, the reason is because it is HOT, this is not a plus obviously, but I can live with it – what can I do?

The educational and cultural bit of the morning was learning about the Etruscans. These ancient Italians lived in the area today is Tuscany. First we started with a visit to with a drive an area called Tarquinia – started in the 7th century BC. Here we saw an Etruscan Necropolis. There were tombs with super cool well preserved colorful paintings all over the walls. Apparently, these are well preserved because the conditions of high humidity

and low temperatures painted on lime stone keep them in good condition. Unfortunately, grave robbers not only took artifacts, but they exposed these graves to the elements – still they are amazing. We saw depictions of Etruscan civilization and apparently these are the only examples of painted Etruscan tombs in the world.



Next we visited the Etruscan National Museum. This museum occupies a 15th century castle which is cool by itself. Here there are artifacts found during excavations of the Necropolis we just visited - sarcophagi, pottery, coins, and jewellery.

Our last stop is at an agrotourismo farmhouse to taste locally produced food and wine. Here we taste wine, bread, cheese, ham, bruschetta and olives – it is all delicious. By the time we leave I have had my fill and there is no need for lunch.



In the afternoon we spend some time at the pool before retreating to the air-conditioned room for a nap
