January 9 – Montego Bay, Jamaica

Weather – 25º, very overcast

Steps – 9,759

Ocho Rios turned into Montego Bay. No idea why, I guess Regent isn’t the only cruise line to change itineraries with no explanation. We weren’t married to Ocho Rios in the least, so no big deal. Today’s tour turned out to be very interesting.

We weren’t docking until 11 with our tour not until 11:15, so it was another lazy room service morning.

Rose Hall Mansion

The tour was titled the White Witch of Rose Hall. Rose Hall is an 18th century mansion (former sugar cane plantation), and the White Witch is the name slaves gave to plantation owner Annie Palmer. The story revolved around a legend about the spirit of Annie Palmer who allegedly haunts the grounds of Rose Hall Plantation. Annie Palmer had 3 husbands all of which she killed. Then she was killed by one of the slaves. Johnny Cash actually wrote a song about the legend “The Ballad of Annie Palmer” I don’t think I’ve ever heard it.

Annie Palmer's tomb

The guide who took us around the mansion and told us the story was great. She brough the story to life. We’ve toured a few mansions/palaces/great houses in the past and this is one of the best experiences. We didn’t just learn facts, but the story told in an interesting was.
mansion grounds

Part of the 30-minute drive there and back was along the Hip Strip, full of bars, restaurants, including Usain Bolt’s.

We had hoped for a beer and maybe something to eat in the port area, but our ship was docked at a spot that required a shuttle to the area of the port where we could have done that – that was too much of a production for us, so we had

lunch back on the ship.

Today the bus driver asked us if we’d ever been to Jamaica before…yes, we said, last week! It was a funny exchange.

silent disco

The highlight of the night was supposed to be the Silent Disco. We’ve done a few of these in the past and they’re fun. This was OK.

My email is fixed...no idea what happened.
