September 22 – AT SEA

not a bad view
Weather – 10º, partly cloudy. Would have been a good day for glacier viewing.

Steps – 5,122

12 hours 10 min of daylight

Latitude – Calgary 51º, at sea = 58º

Today we were supposed to be sailing along and admiring the Hubbard Glacier - nope. I knew nothing about Hubbard Glacier (or any glacier for that matter) before this trip. We have a ‘glacier expert’ onboard who gave a lecture yesterday about it and was supposed to narrate the entire day today. It’s a real bummer, but weather is weather.

Today, being Sunday meant it was ‘caviar Sunday’ for breakfast. We don’t always go to breakfast, but when it’s caviar we try to go. The ship does a good job of

fanciest gym equipment I've ever seen

‘Saturday Marys’ (bloody Marys for breakfast) and caviar Sundays.

After breakfast we got a coffee and sat outside-ish. There’s a covered area at the pool with heaters, self-serve coffee and tea with cookies gazing at the ocean…lovely. It was 10:00 and I almost fell asleep!

Chris won $130 at BINGO and I finally made it to the gym. The gym here is almost exactly the same as the gym on the ship we were on in the summer, except that the machines are very fancy. They basically keep track of the weight you are lifting, how many reps and sets you’ve done…can’t say I’ve ever seen this before.

Neither of us were particularly hungry, so we skipped lunch altogether and spent the rest of the afternoon in the room watching the onboard lecturers on our

guest speakers

room’s TV. The lecturers are usually super interesting, but if I can watch a recording of their sessions in my PJs in my room that’s what I’ll choose. This cruise has 3 expert speakers. One focuses on photography, one is a Broadway producer who tells stories about…Broadway, and the third is an anthropologist who talks about glaciers, was supposed to narrate the glacier, and who shared info on the indigenous groups in Alaska.
We had dinner tonight at ‘Prime 7’ – the ship’s steak place (one of 3 specialty reservations required restaurants.) The main dining room here takes no
afternoon chilling

reservations, but 3 of the ‘specialty’ ones do. People get a bit worked up about getting reservations for the specialty ones. Everyone is guaranteed one visit to each of the 3 specialty restaurants. We always go to the specialty restaurants for a bit of a change of pace, but we really like the main dining room, where the menus always change, and it’s a more happening place. Anyway…last night we tried to get into the main dining room, but it was so busy they asked us if we’d go to the steak place…sure. However…we had a reservation there tonight…no problem.
