popsicles at the pool |
Steps – 11,262
Humidity – 52%
Jet lag remains – we’ve got nothing to do, so to
me it’s not a big deal to wake up at 4:30, read a bit, take a 6am nap before
breakfast.
Breakfast was just as good and interesting as
yesterday.
We are odd balls at this hotel without little
kids. We’ve noticed that nearly everyone has kids under the age of about 3,
there are a few kids around 6 or 7, but I’d say 25-40% of the guests are under
3! This doesn’t bother us at all, but it’s very noticeable.
We consider doing some sight seeing, but realize
we saw many of the mainsight seeing yachts
Dubai sights the last time we were here. Plus, tomorrow
we are moving hotels to the one pre-night included with the cruise fare which
is downtown close to the Dubai mall and the fountains. Another thing discouraging
us from venturing far from the hotel is the brutal traffic. Ubers aren’t too bad
(about $30 CAN) to get anywhere, but that anywhere would take at least half an
hour. We have an awesome hotel to waste a bit by leaving, so we decide to enjoy
the hotel for another day.
After breakfast we hit the pool. It was HOT, like
really hot…40º at 11am. We sat and read and basically relaxed from about 11 to
2:30. Getting in and out of the pool every 20 minutes or so made sitting by the
pool pleasant, especially whenever there was a breeze.
wheel and the sunset
There was plenty of seating to be found. As
soon as we found a spot (in the shade of course) a staff guy was right behind
us with towels and a small soft-sided cooler filled with water. Throughout our pool
time we were brought iced coffee and a pineapple popsicle. There was drink
service if we wanted it, but we stuck with water, coffee, and the popsicle…when
in Dubai!Dubai wheel and surrounding area
Eventually I had a hard time keeping my eyes
open, so we headed back to the room for a nap. I could have slept forever.
Chris is much more disciplined jetlag-wise. I figure with nothing to do, I’ll sleep
when I’m tired - eventually, my body will adjust.
Early evening we found ourselves back at the place
we had a happy hour yesterday with the Colombian bar tender, Marissa. Today I
had a Champagne and Chris had a tequila sour. We learned a bit about working in
Dubai. According to Marissa, working for the Ritz Carlton is desirable because they
pay for your accommodations, transportation to and from work and covered her
travel to get Tim Horton's
to Dubai. She said accommodations are very expensive. One example
she gave was one room (only the room) was about $2000USD/month. She didn’t
actually say what her accommodations were like, just that they were covered by
Ritz Carlton. I always wonder about the workers’ standard of living.pool
After a drink we headed to check out the Dubai
wheel area - more shopping and restaurants. Obviously, there aren’t bars (although
there are a few) but we don’t really see any where else for people to gather
other than beach clubs. I expected to see hookah places but haven’t seen any.
At this point, we are once again, in a lather
so head into the mall for AC. We head for home but find an oasis in the desert
in the form of an Irish pub. We lovely pool area
acknowledge that is a bit of a bail out, but we
are sweltering, sweaty, and seriously parched. A couple of pints and a pub
snack later and we are back to our old selves.
Across the street behind Chris at the pub was a
Tim Hortons!!
PS…I email our notifications of new posts but realize
they don’t always get through- it must be the heat!
