sailing and caipirinhas |
Nothing is on our schedule until this afternoon. We typically choose morning tours, so we have our afternoons free, but today we aren’t docking until noon, so an afternoon tour it is!
This afternoon was a beach excursion, not
usually up our street, but activities today were limited, so this seemed like a
good choice from the options. We gothome for the next 2 weeks
to the beach via a 20 min catamaran sail.
On the catamaran we had a couple of caipirinhas, which were definitely the best
caipirinhas we’ve had since we arrived in Brazil – very limey, but also sweet
and not too boozy…yum!
About 1 million people live in Maceió, but you
wouldn’t know it from where we were today – it had a very small-town feel. We
made our way via bus from the port to a lagoon where the São Miguel River meets
Christmas Eve sun and sand
the ocean. We had about 90 minutes to wander the shore. Some people swam, but
we just walked in the water along the shore – swimming is always too much of a
commitment for me and had another caipirinha.

After our time at the beach, we visited a handicraft market, many of the stalls and workshops are inside the homes of fishermen. Maceió is famous for lacework called “rendas” that resembles the fishing nets used in the area. It was actually very beautiful, but nothing caught our eye.
